Robert Cottam, a local of Cedar City said, “I lived in Texas for two years and had some pretty amazing barbeque. When I returned to Utah, I thought there was no way I was going to find anything that compared. . . until I discovered Sonny Boy’s. It’s as close to real Texan food as you’re gonna get.”
In 2011, Sonny Boys won the award for Outstanding New Business of the Year. And it’s no wonder why. It was founded for the sole purpose of bringing the best tastes of the south to southern Utah. Father (Lon) and son (Scott) are super dedicated to this cause. For instance, Scott travels the world, sampling world renowned barbeque and discussing smoking skills with some of the world’s best chefs. He has now created his own recipe, a super secretive blend of spices that is hand-made daily before it is applied to the finest cuts of pulled pork and beef brisket which is then smoked for over twelve hours! This process makes the meat literally fall off the bone in a succulent combination of tenderness and flavor. Seriously—the best meat. And it’s not just beef and pork. Sonny Boy’s menu also includes rotisserie chicken and hand rubbed ribs, also seasoned with Scott’s secret spices. Their sides are also amazing—fried cauliflower, coleslaw, garlic red mashed potatoes, fries, hush puppies, baked beans—pretty much the essentials of a good Southern meal.
So. . . all this awesomeness must come with a pretty steep price tag, right? Wrong. Sonny Boy’s prices are actually really affordable—especially for a barbeque establishment which generally averages about $20 a plate. For example, a pulled pork sandwich with one side is only $6.99. Sonny Boys is so amazing! It is one of the only different types of restaurants in Cedar! I love it! Plus, if you look in the coupon clipper magazines that you get in the mail every month, they have coupons for Sonny Boys. My husband and I love to go there.
